Baboons and chimps are the pinnacle of strength, intelligence, and agility. Both animals wield a powerful bite and are highly social. If the two were to ever meet face to face on the battlefied, the Chimpanzee would come out the victor in most cases.
When it comes to one on one combat, strength, agility, and intellect are often the deciding factor. The Chimpanzee severely outclasses the Baboon in all categories except agility. Here's a detailed analysis of both combatants and their battle.
A Chimpanzee is exponentially stronger than a Baboon. The former has more muscle mass and can weigh twice as much as a Baboon. Chimpanzees can top out at around 100 pounds or 45 kilograms while a Baboons seldom exceeds 50 pounds or 22 kilograms.
In comparison to humans, a chimp is roughly 35% stronger than a full-grown man whereas a well-trained man can likely over power a Baboon...though, I wouldn't try it! Baboons still possess huge canines and are vicious when provoked, so don't go picking fights with them!
When it comes to intellect, I judge animals by how well the solve problems, adapt to changes, and collaborate with others. The Chimpanzee excels in all of these categories, with troops functioning in a way that is very similar to that of well-trained armies.
They communicate and strategize attacks on rival troops to gain territory much like humans do. Baboons, on the other hand live in troops but generally do not hunt together. Each troop member is responsible for their own meals, making them less effective in group activities than Chimpanzees.
Chimps are also smart enough to learn sign language, a feat only apes have been able to accomplish. To date, no monkey (Baboons, Lemurs, etc) has been able to master any form of sign language. Overall, the edge in the brains department goes to the Chimpanzee.
Chimpanzees and Baboons live in the same area with territories often overlapping so encounters between the two species is probably happening as you read this. If a fight were to happen, it would likely be due to someone straying to far into another's territory.
It's also possible that a Chimpanzee will pursue a vulnerable Baboon as a food source. Chimps often dine on monkey flesh, and a large Baboon would provide a nice protein-packed meal for the troop. For the Baboon to survive, they would have to have a buddy or two backing them up.
Chimps are tough, but a single male would be hard-pressed to fight off two or three fully-grown angry Baboons. Encounters happen often, but they may not always be violent. They can, in some rare cases, become physical in a different way.
Chimpanzees and Baboons can certainly engage in the act of mating, but it will not produce a viable offspring; instead, it'll just produce a ton of weird noises throughout the jungle. Apes can interbreed with other apes, however. Bonobo Chimpanzees can breed with other Chimps and produce hybrids, but monkeys and apes cannot.
It would be a really cool animal, and though this won't be possible in the wild, I put together in lovely pixel art what a Baboon Chimpanzee Hybrid would look like.
There's a reason the Planet of the Apes was not run by Baboons. While they are powerful creatures, they are just outclassed in almost every imaginable way by the Chimpanzee. If you want a closer battle with a great ape, head over to the battle simulator for the Gorilla vs the Bear.
