In this week’s edition of Fantasy Brawls we’ve got two of the most terrifying reptiles to ever grace our planet, the Komodo Dragon and the Crocodile. Both animals are enormous and possess a wide array of combat abilities and weapons that make them an absolute nightmare to face off against. What would happen if these two ever met face-to-face on the battlefield? Let’s find out by first determining which of these creatures is bigger.
Which is bigger, the Komodo Dragon or Crocodile?
Komodo dragons are the biggest lizards you’ll find on our fair planet. They can grow up to 10 feet in length and weigh up to 200 pounds with the biggest on record tipping the scale at a whopping 300 pounds. A truly massive lizard indeed. In my home state of Florida we’ve got tons of big lizards roaming around, namely the iguana. These dinos are about 5 feet from nose to tail and weigh around 20 pounds…and to me they are massive!
If they were anywhere near the size of Komodo’s I’d grab the wife and kids and never set sight on the Sunshine State again! Crocodiles, on the other hand, are in a league of their own. There are a number of species of crocodilians but even the smaller variants dwarf the Komodo in length and weight. Here’s a chart showing the differences in size between the Komodo, the Saltwater Crocodile, Nile Crocodile, and Mugger Crocodile.
| 🐂 Creature | 📏 Length (feet) | ⚖️ Weight (pounds) |
|---|---|---|
| Komodo Dragon 🦎 | Up to 10 | Up to 200 (max 300) |
| Saltwater Crocodile 🦞 | 14–17 (max 23) | 900–2,200 (max 3,000+) |
| Nile Crocodile 🦞 | 10–16 (max 20) | 500–1,600 |
| Mugger Crocodile 🦞 | 7–10 (max 13) | 250–1,000 |
As you can see, there is no comparison between the two in terms of size. Crocs eclipse their draconic foes in size so the early advantage goes to them. Next up, we’ll determine which of these creatures is faster.
Who is faster, a Komodo Dragon or Crocodile?
Crocodiles are pretty fast on land despite their clumsy gait and short stubby limbs. They aren’t fast by any means and max out at speeds of 11 mph. Crocs also tire fast..I mean very fast. They can only sustain their top speed for a matter of seconds before gassing out. Komodos aren’t much faster hitting speeds of 12 mph in short bursts. Their stamina is much better than their opponent’s however, they can maintain their speed longer and engage in longer combat sessions on land.
In short, on land the Komodo reigns supreme. But what about in water, which of these creatures has the better aquatic abilities? In the water, Salties or Nile Crocs can reach speeds of 25 mph. They glide through the water and accelerate like torpedoes. They’re super agile and maneuverable in the water as they drown and dismember their victims with ease. Dragons are pretty decent swimmers with great endurance as they often swim for miles traveling in between islands.
But their swimming ability is more like mine, a glorified doggie paddle. They aren’t nearly as agile in water and cannot swim much faster than a well trained human. In the water, there is no contest between the two. So in this category, we’ll have to call it a tie.
Who is stronger, a Komodo Dragon or Crocodile?
It may come as no surprise to many that the crocodile has one of the most powerful bites on the planet. A single chomp from these mini kaijus exerts around 3,700 PSI. This is enough to snap a Komodo into two or three separate dragons. Komodo’s are pretty strong too. They can muster a bite force of 600 PSI which may sound impressive on paper but it's roughly on par to what a big dog delivers. It would certainly hurt but isn’t enough to break any part of the croc’s armor. Winner…by a huge margin: the Crocodile. Next up, we’ll be examining the weaponry and armor each of these combatants bring to the table.
Who has the better arsenal, the Komodo or Croc?
Crocodiles have a legendary build in terms of both offense and defense. They have thick, one inch plates covering most of their body and a heavily plated tail allowing them to tank bites and hits from some of the most powerful animals around. In addition to the plating they’ve got the legendary bite force we were talking about earlier and a deadly killing maneuver…the death roll.
For the uninitiated, the death roll is a move crocodilians use to tear off large chunks of flesh from their prey. It's a simple yet effective strategy that involves the croc latching on to a limb or the victims head in some cases using that 3,700 PSI plus bite force. Once the grip has been secured, it then rotates its body violently in circles until its tears a bite size chunk off.
The death roll is even more impactful if the animal resists and attempts to roll against the croc. This only makes things worse and the croc’s job easier. The key here is to go with the roll and aim for the croc’s vulnerable areas like their eyes, ears, and nose.
Death rolls and armor are impressive but how do they compare to their opponents' potentially deadly bite? Komodos don’t have the mass crocs do but they make up for it with their deadly bite. The dragons possess a nasty toxin in their mouths that prevents its target’s blood from clotting and causes vasodilation. They also possess some tough osteoderms on their hide for defense but nowhere near the level of the crocodiles. So, which of these creatures has the better arsenal? The venom of the dragon is impressive but the prehistoric powers of the croc are nearly unmatched. Winner: Crocodile.
With the battle analysis complete, it's time to put both creatures into the Fantasy Brawls battle arena to decide the winner of this bout. Will the Komodo’s venom be enough to topple the legendary crocodile, let’s find out!
Komodo Dragon vs Crocodile: The Fantasy Brawl!
The terrain for this battle is mixed, half dry land and half water so both animals can utilize their strengths. The Komodo Dragon strolls down to the local watering hole for a sip only to encounter a big, hungry croc waiting for its next meal. The croc slowly approaches but the quick witted Komodo catches wind of the beast and narrowly avoids its deadly ambush.
The two animals are now face-to-face as the croc has traveled onto the land. The Komodo seizes the opportunity to attack its slower foe and attempts to sink its teeth into the modern dino. This bite dumps venom straight into the crocs body with the ensuing battle causing rapid transmission due to the high volume of blood pumping.
The battle rages on with Komodo landing a few well placed tail swipes and scratches but ultimately comes to a screeching halt once the croc latches on to the dragon’s head and begins its infamous death roll, ending the battle once and for all. And if you’re worrying about the venom the croc has coursing through its body, it wasn’t enough to put such a giant beast down. Its a slow acting poison that takes days to kill animals nowhere near the croc’s size. Winner: Crocodile.

Frequently Asked Questions
How Do Crocodiles Avoid Getting Dizzy During Death Roll?
Crocs don’t get dizzy during death rolls because their brains are small and dense, making them less vulnerable to the shifting forces of rotational movement. In addition they don’t rely on inner ear balance like we do as they technically are not “upright animals”. God tuned these beasts to be immune to nearly anything that would lessen the effectiveness of the death roll.
Can Komodo Dragon Venom Kill A Crocodile?
While dragon venom is deadly to many creatures, its not strong enough to put a fully grown crocodile down. Crocodiles have very strong systems as they swim around all day in heavily bacteria infested waters. It takes some very strong poison to kill a beast that swims in waste for a living.
Do Komodo Dragons and Crocodiles Ever Meet In The Wild?
Yes, they inhabit the same regions. A confrontation would most likely take place on one of the Indonesian islands the Komodo calls home. Saltwater crocs live here as well but mostly stick to brackish waters while Komodos hang around forests. There have been no confirmed fights to date, other than the Fantasy Brawls battle arena.
How To Survive A Death Roll?
To survive a death roll you must resist the urge to go against the direct the crocodile is rolling. Similar to riding out the tide, you’ll need to go with the direction of the spins to prevent any limbs from popping off. Then, if you survive that its time to pray the croc is either too tired to continue the onslaught or it loses interest in you.
How Can A Crocodile Beat a Komodo Dragon?
A Komodo Dragon can realistically only beat a juvenile crocodile in battle if the stars align just right. The croc cannot be fully healthy and the battle needs to take place on land. Then and only then will the Komodo stand a chance. Crocodiles are super sluggish on land and if they are already suffering from a nasty wound, they may succumb to the dragon’s venom more easily.
