In this week's edition of Fantasy Brawls, we have two of the most popular supernatural beings in history. Fighting out of the red corner is the mysterious, devious Djinn. And in the blue corner is the less intense but still powerful Genie. Both creatures possess enough magical power to overthrow entire nations if they were so inclined. But who wins in a one-on-one fight? Let’s find out by determining which of them is stronger.
Since there are so many different pieces of lore about both creatures, we’ll start out by defining which kind of Jinn and Genie we’re having duke it out. The Jinn we’re using is a master of the fire element, illusions, and possesses superhuman strength, speed and powerful magic. Our genie is no slouch either, it wields ridiculous magical powers that transcend both time and space. It can regenerate itself, morph, fly, etc. But, where it really shines is its wishing ability.
The same powers it can bestow unto its master can be used on itself. But, to keep things fair for the Jin, we’ll use some of the same classic rules:
The last one is important because it somewhat nerfs the genie’s ability and forces it to think under pressure. This gives the jinn a better chance of defeating. But, in terms of raw strength and potential the edge has to go to the genie.
Genies aren’t always confined to a lamp like the big blue one in Aladdin. They are sometimes kept in rings, old pottery, and even jewelry. But, whatever they are stuck in, they are generally held there until some lucky or unlucky soul releases them. Once released they are bound to their masters until they grant three wishes.
In this fantasy battle, we’ll temporarily remove the burden on needing a master from the genie to allow it to scrap. It will serve as a means of defense, however, giving it the ability to retreat and shield itself from the Jinn’s onslaught. But it will also nerf the genie’s speed and prohibit it from flying very high.
A genie uses its magical powers to grant wishes to its masters. There are generally some rules and limitations like prohibiting additional wishes, for example. In addition, most genies either cannot or will not use wishes for themselves. The reason for this varies from storyteller to storyteller but I imagine the limit is imposed to prevent a global genie takeover.
Our Fantasy Brawl starts off in the Shadowlands terrain. A newly freed genie is lugging around his lamp, happily freed from his master when he smells something burning. And after scanning the area he quickly finds out that it's not BBQ he’s smelling but an angry Jinn, ready to pounce and steal its lamp.
The Jinn strikes first, launching a massive fireball the genie’s way. The genie tanks the hit and is shaken but not out. The genie then attempts to counter with a volley of its own, a non-elemental energy blast. It lands on its target and buys just enough time for the genie to think of a wish. The jin closes in quickly and starts to heat the genie's lamp in an attempt to cook it alive.
The genie is in pain but finally musters up enough strength to utter the words, “I wish your attacks always missed me”. Just this the jinn pauses the attack but then resumes a few moments later. The genie, puzzled, wonders if its magic requires a master to work.
He then remembers his exact words and comes to the realization that the Jinn isn’t attacking him, rather his lamp. The genie must think quickly before he’s cooked (literally and metaphorically). He gathers himself and lets out his second wish: “I wish holy rain falls on you”. While the wish wasn’t grammatically sound, it was under seven words and immediately unleashes a torrent of holy water of the jinn, weakening the fire based demon tremendously. This allows the genie a little time to think of its final wish. The genie unleashes his third and final wish. He yells out, “I wish to imprison you in holy ice”. Then, instantly, a jinn-sicle is formed on the field and the Fantasy Brawl is over. Winner…Genie!
If the Genie had hesitated on that second wish… even by a heartbeat, things might have turned tragic. The Jinn’s firestorm, fueled by centuries of bottled rage, can reach temperatures that melt iron in seconds. With the lamp already glowing cherry-red, one more unopposed blast might have shattered the vessel and released the Genie’s essence into the Shadowlands, ending the fight instantly. A different terrain would also change everything. In a Volcanic Rift arena, the Jinn’s fire power would spike enough to overpower holy rain and likely break free of the final ice seal.
Jinns are generally depicted as fire type entities, being able to generate powerful heatwaves at will. There are, however, some legends that assign them other attributes like water. But for our battle, we’re sticking to the classics and keeping it as a fire demon.
Yes and no. In Arabic cultures genies can be evil or neutral. But in other media they are generally depicted as somewhat helpful/happy beings. They certainly aren’t as bad as say a fallen angel but I would classify them as a subspecies of demon. Put it this way, they have much more in common with a hellspawn than an Angel!
For the longest I used the spelling ‘Djinn’ as this was the spelling used in the only horror movie not to give me nightmares, the 2021 film The Djinn. The correct spelling is actually Jinn. I used both here for search engine optimization because ranking high on Google is something that not even a wish from a Genie can do.
Yes. While some folk tales say a master must word the wish, Fantasy Brawls rules allow self-targeting as long as the 7-word and “I wish” requirements are met.
No. A Jinn’s fire is magical, not chemical. It burns in vacuum or underwater until its spiritual essence is disrupted by holy forces or a counter-wish.
Not by itself. Holy water weakens and burns the spirit’s core, but only a follow-up containment, like the Genie’s final holy ice wish or a sealed vessel ritual—finishes the job.
The Genie, with its nearly infinite means of attack and defense via its wish power, won this battle. It was a tough fight but in the end, the Genie is only limited by its power. If you want to create your own demon like a jinn, genie, or even an oni, check out this super cool Demon Character Generator. And if you’d like to play out this battle and many more like it, head on over to Fantasy Brawls the Online Game. There, you can put a genie against a mighty poltergeist/alchemist, known as Ghulvein. Or, have it try its luck against my favorite Brawler, Necrosteer.
Either way you go, keep in mind that both jinns and genies are Shadow attribute brawlers who are nerfed in battlefields like Cyberspace. Try to play them in the Shadowlands to bring out their full potential. And while these shadow beasts typically have poor defense, they make up for it in attack power and the ability to wield moves like Corrupt and Recover.
And, if you're hungry for a more grounded battle, check out the epic showdown: Sloth Bear vs Hyena. While not as super natural as this battle, its plenty exciting and the victor may surprise you.
