In this week's edition of Fantasy Brawls we've got the menacing mauler, the Spotted Hyena, making another appearance in the battle simulator. She'll be taking on a monster making their debut into the Fantasy Brawls area, the sleek, powerful Jaguar. Both of these animals are strong enough to kill prey several times their size and agile enough to fend off much larger opponents. Let's first dive into a size comparison to see how these two stack up. Spoiler alert! They're not too different in size.

Hyena vs Jaguar: Who Is Bigger?

When it comes to overall bulk and size, the Jaguar is a bit bigger than its opponent, the Hyena. Jags are tipping the scale anywhere between 120 and 250 pounds, whereas Hyenas generally max out at around 190 pounds. This gives the bulk advantage to the Jaguar. The Hyena has the advantage in height, however. They stand at about 3 feet at the shoulder, and Jaguars are roughly 2.5 feet. It's not a huge difference on paper, but in a fight, every inch and pound counts.

When it comes to length, the Jag is the winner, measuring up to 6 feet from nose to tail tip. The Hyena is also pretty big, just not as long as the Jaguar at 5 feet in length. So, the Jaguar wins 2 out of 3 categories of size we measure at Fantasy Brawls, so the advantage goes to the big cat. Let's see if all the bulk translates to a power advantage in the next section.

Hyena vs Jaguar: Who Is Stronger?

For the strength measurement, we'll consider two distinct categories: pulling power and bite force. The latter is pretty much a given since the primary weapon for both of these animals is their jaws. But the ability to pull your opponent and manipulate their position to secure a fatal strike is just as vital as the bite itself. When it comes to biting ability, the Jaguar packs the highest bite force of any big cat at 1,500 PSI. The Hyena can also crush with ease, just not as efficiently as a Jaguar can with their 1,000 PSI bite force.

When it comes to pulling, Jaguars have massive explosive strength enabling them to drag prey up tall trees and tangle with the likes of caimans and anacondas. Hyenas are tough as well, frequently competing with lions for prey and defending themselves from their attacks. It's tough to say who can pull more weight, but given the Jaguar's muscle structure and explosiveness, we can say with a high degree of certainty that the Jaguar takes the edge here... at least initially.

Hyenas have the build and tenacity for long, drawn-out battles. In a grappling match that doesn't end in a first-round knockout, the Jaguar simply wouldn't be able to go the distance the way a Hyena would. In this category, we have a tie. Next up we have the speed round to determine which of these quadrupedal beasts is the fastest.

Hyena vs Jaguar: Who Is Faster?

Jaguars are some of the fastest creatures on land, reaching top speeds of up to 50 mph with ease. And unlike other fast animals they can turn on a dime. Their builds give them the ability to accelerate, pivot, then strike with extreme precision. They are custom built for jungle life as the Amazon and other places are absolutely littered with trees and super dense shrubbery. Animals need to be nimble in their movement to survive.

Hyenas by contrast, are also very fast, reaching top speeds of around 37 miles per hour. And they can sustain high speeds like these for miles if needed. Jags are likely to gas out well before Hyenas do. So in an endurance race the Hyena takes the W, but in terms of raw speed, the Jaguar wins by a mile... pun intended. Let's examine the combat skills both animals bring to the table next.

Who Is a Better Fighter, a Jaguar or Hyena?

Jaguars, like many big cats, aim to get fights over with quickly and efficiently. They love to strike the neck, crush their opponent's windpipe and move them somewhere safe for dinner. They are extremely surgical in their hunting. These predators don't want an hours-long battle so they choose to ambush potential meals instead of directly confronting them. In terms of weaponry, Jags are like sniper rifles whereas Hyenas are more like machine guns.

A Hyena can fight for hours on end without tiring. The animals are truly built for long battles and thrive in fights that require many blows to determine a victor. They don't rely on a singular tactic to topple foes, rather they fight with and use whatever tactics needed to come out on top. Jaguars are definitely the more effective hunters, but the Hyena is the superior fighter. Winner in the fighting ability category is the Spotted Hyena. In our final category before the big showdown we'll examine each animal's aggressiveness.

Who Is More Aggressive, a Hyena or Jaguar?

Jaguars are smart predators. They only engage in battle when absolutely necessary and won't pick fights they don't think they'll win. The idea is that these smart felines want to minimize injury to themselves as a broken tooth or lost eye can mean starvation in the harsh environments they live in. So, they aren't overtly aggressive for this reason. Hyenas however, are bold. They don't care if you're a lion or antelope, if you're in their way you're going to feel their jaws.

Hyenas live in groups, unlike the solitary Jaguar, and are fighting and competing with one another from birth. Growing up in an intense gang where might is right produces creatures with serious sociopath energy. They are highly territorial and mark their turf with their scent. If another clan dares to wander into their side of town, the Hyenas will maul the trespassers to death. The same goes for anything else foolish enough to wander into their homes. In the aggression department, the clear winner here is that menacing laughing beast. The more aggressive animal here is clearly the Hyena. With all the categories analyzed, it's time to put these two combatants in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena.

Hyena vs Jaguar: The Fantasy Brawl!

A freshly slain antelope is laying in an open field. The smell is spreading all over the Fantasy Brawl battle arena and managed to catch the noses of a Spotted Hyena and a Jaguar. The Jag, never one to leave a dinner bell unanswered, comes rushing in. At around the same time, a large female Hyena is making her way to the piping hot meal. Both animals eventually meet and lock eyes.

The Jaguar, who's typically used to ambushing prey, will need to adapt to fighting an opponent head-on. But before it does, the Hyena lunges at the Jaguar, prompting the big cat to dodge and counter with its own strike. Its claw swipe hits right on the money and causes the Hyena to recoil and adjust its strategy. It can't just attack the Jag directly since the kitty is just far too agile. It'll need to wear the opponent down to get the win.

The battle rages on with the Jaguar landing tons of strikes on the Hyena, riddling it with lacerations. But after a while, the Jag starts to gas out due to its inferior stamina. This allows the Hyena to land some nasty bites itself on the Jag's leg, which limits its mobility and reduces its agility just enough for the Hyena to give all 1,000 PSI of jaw pressure to the big cat's neck. The final bite crushes the Jaguar's windpipe, ending the battle and essentially giving the Hyena an extra meal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Jaguars and Hyenas related?

Jaguars and Hyenas are not related. Jaguars are felines, part of the big cat family, while Hyenas belong to a separate family, Hyaenidae.

Can a Jaguar and Hyena breed?

Given that their genetic makeup is so dissimilar, Hyenas and Jaguars cannot breed, but if they could, here's what I think their offspring would look like.

Jaguar Hyena Hybrid

Do Jaguars and Hyenas fight in the wild?

Hyenas are native to Africa, whereas Jaguars roam the jungles of Central and South America. So, they would not naturally encounter each other and, thus, would never fight in the wild. In fact, the only place they've ever fought each other is in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena.

Who is the more skilled hunter: the Jaguar or the Hyena?

Jaguars hunt more efficiently than Hyenas. They are clean, efficient, and strive to reduce their chance of injury. Hyenas are a bit more cavalier in their hunting, often throwing caution to the wind when something tasty wanders by.

What would happen if a Hyena and Jaguar fought over food in the wild?

In reality, a Jaguar would be swiftly killed if a fight broke out over food. Hyenas are seldom alone, so the Jaguar would have to contend with a group of nasty predators. If it were a one-on-one bout, the Jag would have a better chance.

What would happen if a Hyena and Jaguar fought in a one-on-one battle?

In a one-on-one battle, the Jaguar would likely have the upper hand in the early moments due to its explosive speed and powerful bite. But the endurance and tenacity of the Hyena would likely be the deciding factor if the Jaguar doesn't manage to kill the Hyena instantly.

How does a Jaguar's camouflage help in combat?

Jaguar's camouflage is really only helpful in ambush scenarios. If the Jaguar has already been spotted (pun intended), it's unlikely to disappear back into its environment as easily. It can certainly help get the jump on an opponent, but other than the initial surprise, it isn't much help in a confrontation.

Are male Jaguars bigger than female Jaguars?

Unlike Hyenas and Great White Sharks, Jaguar males are generally much bigger than Jaguar females.

The Hyena wins a series of 10 battles around 65% to 75% of the time. The Jaguar was initially more powerful, but it could not last as long as the Hyena in a battle. If you're a Hyena fan like I am, you'll be thrilled to know that she has made a number of other appearances on our site. Head over to Lioness vs Hyena to see how the Hyena fares against another big kitty. The laughing predator has also gone up against a grey wolf in the Spotted Hyena vs Grey Wolf battle.
