In this week’s edition of Fantasy Brawls we’ve got two competitors with an appetite for violence. In one corner is the King of the Jungle himself, the African Lion and his opponent for this brawl is the biggest lizard on God’s green Earth, the Komodo Dragon. One has stealth and explosive power, the other has a powerful tail and venom. Which of these animals will come out on top? Let’s find out by first analyzing each animal’s size.

Komodo Dragon vs Lion: Who is Bigger?

Dragons are huge lizards, in fact, you won’t find another lizard bigger than him on the planet. From snout to tail it can reach lengths of 10 feet. They aren’t lightweights either, they tip the scales at an impressive 200 pounds, which coincidentally happens to be my goal weight (wish me luck!). These are impressive stats but they pale in comparison to the big kitty breathing down its neck in this battle.

Fully grown, male lions not only have an impressive head of hair. They also weigh up to 800 pounds and can be as long as 8 feet from snout to tail. This makes them among the largest felines in the world. The dragon is a bit longer than its foe but when it comes to girth, its fighting way above its weight class. Advantage: Lion.

Komodo Dragon vs Lion: Who is Faster?

Lions are built for speed. They routinely chase down some of the fastest terrestrial creatures around for a meal. Powerful runners like Zebras and Antelopes are on their menu so they need to be able to move fast or they’ll starve. Their top speed is an impressive 50 miles per hour in short bursts. This puts them in the upper tier of predator speed rankings.

Komodo Dragons, however, are significantly slower than lions. They can only hit speeds of 12 miles per hour in short bursts. But, you can’t really blame them for it. The animals simply don’t need to be very fast, they rely on their venom to topple large foes and tend to wear their prey down rather than overwhelm them with brute force. In addition, their anatomy doesn’t allow for efficient sprints, they have short stumpy legs and generally lumber along the battlefield. Without question, the speed advantage goes to the Lion.

Komodo Dragon vs Lion: Who is Stronger?

The Komodo Dragon is packing a bit force of around 600 PSI enabling it to incapacitate nearly anything unlucky enough to end up its terrifying pie hole. They are also packing strong leg and neck muscles enabling them to drag the venom filled bodies of their victims for great distances with ease. Now this is truly terrifying but the lion is simply in another league when it comes to power. These nasty cats can leap over 30 feet in a single bound, underscoring how strong their leg muscles are. Their forelimbs are strong enough to knock massive Zebra and Water Buffalo off their feet.

Their explosive power is nearly unmatched in the animal kingdom giving them the edge in the power comparison department. Let’s see if the Komodo can pull off a win in the weapons department with its super deadly venom.

Komodo Dragon vs Lion: Who has the better weapons?

When it comes to the number of weapons each combatant brings to the battle, they are about even. To crown a winner in this category, we’ll examine how efficient each tool in their arsenal is. Starting with the Lion who brings the following deadly toys to every fight:

  • Razer sharp, 1.5 inch retractable claws
  • Jaws and Fangs. Its jaws output 650 PSI bite power and its fangs are up to 3 inches long
  • Massive jumping ability
  • 8 inch thick, luxurious mane, guarding its neck from tail blows and bites

Impressive no doubt but the Komodo is no slouch in the equipment department, here’s what our scaley warrior is bringing to the table:

  • Slow acting but deadly venom in every bite
  • A massive tail, strong enough to bruise bone and inflict massive pain
  • Scale armor allowing it to absorb claw strikes from the Lion

I know…I combined both defensive equipment and offensive equipment…sue me. Each item the combatant’s inventory comprises a toolkit that makes it fit for victory in almost any battle. However, we can pick only one winner in this category and due to the sheer amount of force and efficiency the lion’s toolkit has, it takes another W.

The terrain for this Fantasy Brawl is the Forest. We chose this field because it’s the closest to both fighter’s natural habitats. In this scenario there is a hungry dragon roaming around looking for a meal. Unbeknownst the him, a rogue male lion who just separated from his bachelor group is also cruising the forest for dinner.

The stage is set for a deadly encounter between two of the most efficient killers walking our lovely planet. The Komodo takes notice of the lion but doesn’t engage initially until the aggressive male lets off a deafening roar. He’d typically rely on ambush tactics but this isn’t his typical prey nor is it a normal rival.

The Komodo reacts to the roar and stands its ground prompting the lion to charge and land the first strike of the battle. The Komodo immediately reacts with a swipe from its tail, staggering the lion and drawing blood. No bones are broken but Simba is hurting. The Lion then returns fire with another strike but this time it leaves its forelimb sitting around too long and the Komodo takes a big chomp.

But in doing so, it exposes its neck, allowing the King to sink its massive fangs into the back of it, ending the battle instantly. But the fight isn’t quite over yet, the Lion now has venom coursing through its body and the adrenaline from the fight is only making it circulate faster. The lion wins the battle and will likely survive the venom due its superb immune system and the fact that the Komodo only landed one bite. Winner: Lion!

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Komodo Dragons would it take to kill a male lion?

It would take at least 3 fully grown Komodo Dragons to kill a lion. And even then they’d need to attack in a somewhat coordinated fashion. Lions are smarter than Komodo Dragons and possess a much higher fight IQ. This will be hard for the non-social lizards to overcome without some luck.

Can Komodo Dragon venom kill a Lion?

Yes…if it is large enough. But it will likely take multiple bites from the Komodo Dragon before its venom is able to overtake the Lion’s ironclad immune system.

Do Komodo Dragons ever face off against lions in the wild?

No, they only face off in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena. The animals don’t have overlapping territories, so a fight would only break out if a zookeeper left their habitats open one night.

Could a Komodo Dragon kill a female Lion?

Though females lions are considerably smaller and weaker than their male counterparts, they would still likely kill a Komodo Dragon in a fight. There is still a signficant size and power difference. In addition, the female may have an even higher fight IQ than the male.

The winner of this match was the big cat but this is far from the Komodo Dragon’s only appearance in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena. For my fellow dragon fans, check out Komodo Dragon vs Tiger, where it takes on the biggest of all big cats. And, once you’re done with that vicious bout, head on over to King Cobra vs Komodo to see who wins in a venom on venom battle. Finally, if you want to play out this battle or any other hypothetical matchup you see on our site, check out Fantasy Brawls - The Online Game!

There you play out all the hypothetical battles and scenarios that keep you up at night. If you want to play out this very battle, here are some tips to keep in mind. The Komodo Dragon is an Earth type brawler with an ability called Toxic Impressions. This allows the Komodo to automatically inflict the poison status on its opponent. Doing so causes its unfortunate foe to lose 6.3% HP every turn and reduces their attack power by 10%. If you strategize just right, you can topple lions, tigers, and bears!
