Welcome to this week's Fantasy Brawls! We have two of the coolest apes on the planet preparing to duke it out in our battle simulator: the super smart Orangutan and the intelligent psycho of the animal kingdom, the Chimpanzee. Both beasts are formidable in battle, so let's start by examining their height and weight to see which animal takes the edge in size.
A Chimpanzee, when fully grown and of the male variety, tips the scales at a maximum of 132 pounds. They also stand around 3 to 4 feet in height. The Orangutan is much larger, weighing up to 220 pounds and standing around 5 feet tall. This gives the overall size advantage to the Orangutan. With the Chimpanzee giving up nearly 100 pounds to its opponent, does that mean it's also weaker...right? Let's find out.
Though the Orangutan is fighting a number of weight classes above the Chimpanzee, the chimp is actually much stronger. This is largely due to the physical differences between chimps and orangutans and what their muscles have evolved to do. Orangutans are built for endurance, and chimps are built for raw, explosive power.
To put it another way, Orangutans are marathon runners while Chimpanzees are built more like Greco-Roman wrestlers. They have big, powerful upper bodies that enable them to throw creatures and other objects with ease. Their bodies are smaller than those of Orangutans, but their builds give them a significant power advantage.
In a powerlifting competition, the chimps are walking away with the W, but since apes also fight with their teeth as well as their fists, it's important to measure their bite strength. Let's see who packs the stronger mandibles.
One of my greatest fears is being bitten in the face by a Chimpanzee. These animals are ferocious and have a bite force of over 1300 Newtons, which is more than enough to tear my face off. However, an Orangutan's jaws are even stronger at around 1400 Newtons.
This is largely due to their differing diets. Chimps tend to eat softer foods like monkeys and fruits, while Orangutans will routinely chomp on tree bark, seeds, and tough plants. Surprisingly, the winner in the bite department goes to the Orangutan. Since the latter has a stronger bite, does that mean it's potentially more aggressive? We'll find out now!
Orangutans are generally pretty chill creatures who prefer to relax, search for food, and stay out of each other's way unless it's time to breed. Chimpanzees, on the other hand, wake up every day, eat a banana, and choose violence. These animals are obscenely aggressive and routinely engage in acts of barbarism against other animals and even members of their own troops.
Chimps engage in infanticide and will end other baby apes for the sole purpose of breeding with their mothers to pass on their own murderous genes. And if that wasn't enough crazy for you, they have been known to engage in cannibalism, not for food but to display dominance over rivals. So... yeah... it goes without saying that the advantage in the aggression department goes to the sociopathic chimp. We know who's crazier, but who's packing the bigger brain?
Both of these animals excel at problem-solving, tool crafting, and memorization. They are nearly even in many aspects, but when it comes down to it, the Orangutan is smarter, and I'll explain why. Chimps derive much of their intelligence from their complex social structures.
They are skilled in communications, coordinating with others, and passing down skills from one generation to the next. This is impressive, but when you consider how intelligent Orangutans are and the fact that they learn all these things on their own without a social net, the chimp's feats become much less impressive.
Being a loner doesn't necessarily make you smarter than an extrovert, but it does give you an advantage when it comes to solitary problem-solving. This type of brainpower comes in handy if you're separated from the troop or you find yourself in the Fantasy Brawl battle simulator like these two are now!
Our brawl takes place in the dense forests of Borneo. A rogue Chimpanzee has escaped his enclosure and wandered into the territory of a fully grown male Orangutan. The Chimpanzee sees the larger foe but decides to challenge it anyway and takes off full speed at the Orangutan.
The latter then uses its massive arms and torso to tank the charge and wraps its long, Wilt Chamberlain-like arms around the ape in an attempt to throw it off. The orange combatant manages to fling the chimp away, but the chimp comes back even angrier than before and lands a nasty bite on the orangutan's shoulder.
The less experienced Orangutan then tries to return a bite of its own but is outmaneuvered by the smaller, more agile foe and is bombarded with a series of powerful blows to the head and neck region. The Orangutan, who is much less durable and battle-tested, eventually succumbs to the onslaught, and the chimp feasts to its psychopathic heart's content on the giant ape's remains.
Chimps are basically the Saiyan Warriors of the ape world. They have likely fought many battles by the time they reach adulthood and seldom ever shy away from a battle. They are battle-tested and have all the tools needed to make short work of the Orangutan.
