I'm taking a little break from adding some new features to Fantasy Brawls - The Online Game to bring to you an interesting matchup between the biggest, baddest bear around, the Polar Bear, and the apex ape, the Gorilla. Both animals are massive, powerful, and cunning, but which of these creatures would walk out alive if they ever met face-to-face? Let's find out on this week's Fantasy Brawl by first analyzing each combatant's strength.

Who is stronger: a Polar Bear or a Gorilla?

Comparing the strength of a Polar Bear to that of a Gorilla is difficult given the drastically different anatomy of the two animals. Gorillas excel at tasks that involve pulling, grabbing, and striking. Polar bears are built for powerful bites, explosive charges, and devastating paw swipes.

So no matter how we slice it, the comparison won't be apples to apples. But here's a chart summarizing the feats of strength for the two beasts.

Trait Polar Bear Gorilla
Weight 900 - 1,600 lbs (males) 300 - 500 lbs (males)
Height (Standing) Up to 10 ft 5 ft 6 in (on two legs)
Bite Force 1,200 PSI ~1,300 PSI
Max Lift (Estimated) ~2,200 lbs (lifting a full-grown walrus) ~1,800 lbs (bench press equivalent)
Grip Strength Unknown, but enough to lift large seals 1,800 - 2,000 PSI

  • Polar bears are absolute powerhouses.

These beasts can flip over 2,000-pound walruses and have been seen dragging beluga whales onto ice sheets.

  • Gorillas are insanely strong for their size.

They can bench press 1,800 pounds and have a grip so strong they could crush bones with ease. Their power is more compact and explosive.

  • The bite force is close, but gorillas have a slight edge.

While the bear has a massive 1,200 PSI bite, a gorilla's 1,300 PSI chomp is slightly stronger—though not designed for slicing through thick hides like the bear’s.

  • Dexterity vs brute force.

The gorilla has the advantage in agility and hand use, but the bear's sheer bulk and raw strength would be overwhelming.

When it comes down to pure raw strength, the Polar Bear gets the W. Its size, power, and ability to generate force make it a titan among land predators. The gorilla, while freakishly strong for its weight, just doesn't have the sheer muscle mass or crushing force to match up to the bear's brutal power. But strength alone doesn’t win fight..speed and agility play a huge role. Let’s see how these animals compare in that department.

Who is Faster: a Polar Bear or a Gorilla?

Gorillas are known for their impressive agility and can move at speeds up to 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour) when chased or threatened. They are highly adaptable climbers and have excellent reflexes, allowing them to outmaneuver opponents with ease. On the other hand, polar bears are not known for their speed; they typically move at a walking pace and can run short distances at speeds of up to 25 miles per hour (40 kilometers per hour).

Given their natural speed and agility, gorillas take this round. But will speed alone be enough to overcome the polar bear? Let's find out in the battle arena!

Polar Bear vs Gorilla - The Battle!

  • Round 1: Initial Encounter
  • Both animals are in their natural habitats. A polar bear senses the presence of a gorilla, using its keen sense of smell and hearing to detect the intruder. The gorilla, on the other hand, is alerted to the presence of a much larger predator.

  • Round 2: Approach
  • The polar bear moves cautiously toward the gorilla, sensing its size and unusual movement patterns. The gorilla, aware of the threat posed by the massive predator, begins to retreat slowly, using its agility and reflexes to avoid direct confrontation.

  • Round 3: Attack
  • The polar bear charges at the gorilla, attempting to overpower it with its immense strength and size. The gorilla, despite its agility, struggles to dodge the bear's powerful strikes due to the bear's sheer mass.

  • Round 4: Counterattack
  • The gorilla, cornered and outmatched in terms of raw strength, resorts to using its agility and dexterity. It lunges at the bear, attempting to grab it by the nose or eyes with its powerful grip, hoping to temporarily blind or disable the predator.

  • Round 5: Final Battle
  • The bear, momentarily stunned by the gorilla's attack, regains its senses and begins to retaliate with renewed ferocity. It swipes at the gorilla, attempting to knock it off balance or dislodge it from its current position. The gorilla, though tenacious, is eventually overwhelmed by the bear's strength and size and is unable to withstand the assault.

Winner: The Polar Bear

Gorillas are tough, powerful, and intelligent creatures. And if put up against most animals, they would come out on top... just not against Ice Bears. These frozen ursas are too large and strong to handle in a one-on-one confrontation. If these two were to ever bump into each other in the wild, the Polar Bear would easily smash the Gorilla.
