Hammerhead vs Bull Shark Who Wins In a Fight?

Hammerhead shark fighting against a Bull Shark.

In this week’s edition of Fantasy Brawls we’ve got two underwater titans duking it out. We have the super aggressive and stocky Bull Shark, going head to hammer…head with the mighty Hammerhead shark. Though only one of these creatures is considered a man eater, both would make for a terrifying swimming partner. Let’s figure out who would win a deep sea brawl between the two oceanic titans by first sizing them up.

Bull Shark vs Hammerhead Shark: Who is Bigger?

A Bull Shark is on the shorter side when it comes to maneaters, topping out at around 10 feet in length, with 8 feet being more common. They weigh up to 500 pounds and are built more like NFL full backs or shorter heavyweights like prime Daniel Cormier and Mike Tyson. They are certainly big enough to one shot most opposing sea creatures.

Hammerheads, however, are much bigger than you probably think. There are reports of Great Hammerheads (the species we generally think of) weighing almost 1,000 pounds at a length of nearly 20 feet. That puts them in competition with Great White Sharks when it comes to length. In some matchups they can be nearly twice as long and as heavy as a Bull Shark. This puts these leagues ahead of their opponent when it comes to size. Winner, by a mile, Hammerhead. Let’s see if all that strength translates into power in the next section.

Bull Shark vs Hammerhead Shark: Who is Stronger?

Hammerheads are twice as long but likely half as strong as Bull Sharks. Bulls are competing with Great Whites when it comes to bite strength clocking a flesh slicing 1,300 PSI. Hammerheads, while bigger, aren’t really built for that type of biting. They are more slicers than crushers due to their anatomy. That comically long, flat head spreads muscle mass pretty thin, thus reducing their overall mechanical bite force.

Bullies have the edge here but sharks also fight with other parts of their bodies. Namely, the ram, similar to a torpedo and thrash by contracting those powerful muscles in an effort to tear off flesh. But, unfortunately for the hammerhead, the Bull Shark excels in the ramming department too. Due to their muscular frame, they are capable of powerful bursts of speed that torpedo them into prey and opponents.

The one area the Hammerhead edges the Bull Shark in is thrashing ability. Hammerheads evolved to hunt stingrays, as such their primary strategy for hunting these dangerous delicacies is as follows:

  • Pin down and incapacitate.
  • Bite down hard.
  • Use their hammer like heads as a lever to rip their meal to shreds

When these hammerheads thrash, their anatomy allows them to generate a massive amount of rotational force. So, the verdict? Bull Sharks took 2 out of the 3 categories. With their impressive ramming ability and bite force, they claim the advantage in the strength competition.

Hammerhead Shark vs Bull Shark: Who Is Faster?

In a race, the Hammerhead and its streamlined, elongated build come out on top every time. They aren’t Mako Sharks by any means but they can hit an impressive 25 miles per hour in short bursts. The shorter, thicker Bull Shark is quick but not in the same league. Winner in the speed department: Hammerhead Shark.

With the battle analysis complete, it's time to put these two in the largest fish tank in the Fantasy Brawls arena to crown a champion.

Hammerhead Shark vs Bull Shark: Who would win in a fight?

This one is close, one of the closest in Fantasy Brawls history. Both animals have impressive tools, power, speed, and hunting abilities. The fight can go either way but it all comes down to who is more likely to sustain more damage and keep fighting. Given the Hammerheads enormous size, the Bull Shark won’t be able to hit it once and stun it, like it does its other prey.

Instead, repeated successful rams and bites will be required to take down the Warhammer Titan. But this is where the Bull Shark specializes. They are tenacious, aggressive animals that exhibit levels of aggression, comparable to roid rage. Hammerheads simply aren’t built for such violence and prolonged battles.

The Hammerhead has less paths to victory than its opponent. To win, they will need to land many precise bites on vital areas of the bull. They need to do this while sustaining minimal damage as each bite from the bull shark reduces their agility, stamina, and life expectancy. For this reason, we have the Bull Shark winning 6 out of 10 battles with the Hammerhead.

It's a close, bloody battle but the Bull Shark does emerge victorious more of than not.

The Bullshark Swims Away With the W!

The Bull Shark won this battle but not without taking some nasty bruises in the process. If you’re a fan of this lovely animal, you’ll enjoy its battle against a Great White Shark. In this battle analysis we did two things, no one else on the Internet is doing. We shrunk the Great White down to the size of a typical Bull Shark and blew the Bull Shark up to the size of a normal Great White. The results were actually pretty surprising.

If you disagree with my assessment of the battle between these two sea monarchs, play out this same exact battle in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena. Both animals are Sea type brawlers with massive attack and strength. The Hammerhead has a better stamina regeneration rate and lower stamina costs, so if you play your cards right, you may be able to gas the Bull out before he bites your head off. Try them out in the area today and head over to the Forums section to interact with other brawlers. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Hammerhead and Bull Shark Breed?

No, the two sharks are incapable of producing offspring, they are too genetically different. However, love did find a way in the land of Fantasy Brawls. Meet Stammer, the Sea brawler and product of such a pairing.

Stammer, Hammerhead and Bull Shark Hybrid.

Can a Hammerhead Shark Kill a Human?

Yes, anything as big as a Great Hammerhead can kill a human IF it really wanted to. But that’s a big if. In fact, there have only been 17 unprovoked attacks on humans since the year 1580. Hammerheads are more interested in sting rays than us but I still wouldn’t recommend messing with one.

Do Bull Sharks attack Hammerheads in The Wild?

Yes, though rare, Bull Sharks have been observed attacking great hammerheads. They usually attack younger, more vulnerable sharks. Fully grown hammers only have to worry about the occasional, homicidal Orca.

Do Hammerheads attack Bull Sharks?

Yes, but generally in self defense or as a means of thwarting a potential threat. They don’t prey on them, even the juveniles. Hammers don’t seek out fights with other large sharks but they aren’t pushovers either.

If a Bull Shark were the same size as a Hammerhead, would the battle outcome be different?

Absolutely, which a battle between the two animals at their normal sizes would be a toss up, increasing the Bull Shark’s size to match the hammers results in a bloodbath. Scaling the Bull Sharks power will result in complete domination. It may sacrifice some speed due to the excess bulk but the power buff is more than worth it.
