Turtle vs Frog: Who Wins?

Frog vs Turtle, who wins in a fight

In this week’s edition of Fantasy Brawls, we have a cold-blooded showdown between two of my favorite pets. The tanky turtle will go one-on-one against the super stealthy frog. One has a powerful, long-range tongue, poison, and mad hops (pun intended). The other is born with a literal tank on its back that provides a near-impenetrable barrier against attacks. For this matchup, we’ll have to set a few ground rules since these animals are so diverse. First, we’ll only use animals who are similar in size. As such, the two animals used for this bout are the Painted Turtle and the African Bullfrog.

Painted Turtle vs African Bullfrog: Who is Bigger?

A painted turtle can weigh up to two pounds and reach a maximum length of around 7 inches. Not a huge animal by any means but just big enough to make the battle competitive. An African Bullfrog can reach a colossal (by frog standards at least) length of 9 inches and weigh up to 4 pounds. Though these animals are fairly similar in size, the African Bullfrog gets the first W of the analysis. Next up we’ll compare the weaponry each combatant brings to the battle.

Weaponry: Painted Turtle vs African Bullfrog

The African Bullfrog’s Arsenal:

Powerful Tongue: The long, sticky tongue of the African Bullfrog turns this brawler into a sniper. It gives the amphibian a reliable ranged attack and can be used in an ambush if timed correctly. While the turtle is way too big to fit in the frog's mouth, if it strikes the right spot it can temporarily blind or disorient the turtle.

Strong Bite: The bite of an African Bullfrog is strong enough to draw blood. They have strong, bony protrusions on their lower jaws that function like our teeth.

Mobility: Frogs, especially the African Bullfrog, can jump impressive lengths. Their powerful legs can allow them to knock unsuspecting turtles over if they launch directly into them. It won’t hurt you but to a painted turtle, it could feel like a hit from an NFL linebacker.

The Painted Turtle's Arsenal:

Near Invulnerable Shell: The shell of a Painted Turtle is extremely hard. It protects not only the turtle's vital organs from attack but can be used to protect its limbs as well. Turtles can almost completely disappear when withdrawing their limbs into their shells. Even foxes and coyotes struggle to penetrate the armor of a turtle, so the African Bullfrog is in for a long fight.

Strong Beak: The Painted Turtle isn’t all defense; it has a strong bite that can inflict serious pain to any frog unlucky enough to land in its beak.

Though the African Bullfrog has the more impressive offensive presence, the defensive power of the Painted Turtle’s shell is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of effectiveness. The advantage in this category goes to the turtle. Next up, we’ll examine the temperament of each animal to see who would be more likely to strike first in a confrontation.

Painted Turtle vs African Bullfrog: Who Is More Aggressive?

Painted Turtles are generally very peaceful creatures that would rather swim away or tuck into their shells when faced with a threat. They don’t seek out confrontation and when trouble does find them, they’d rather hide or run away. If push comes to shove, however, they can bite aggressively.

African Bullfrogs, on the other hand, are highly aggressive and territorial. They will bite and hiss at anything, including us humans, that are perceived to be a threat. This is especially true during mating season. These animals are naturally aggressive and ambush hunters so if a confrontation occurs they will be the ones to strike first. Advantage in the aggressive department goes to the African Bullfrog. The final category before we get into the battle will examine the endurance of each combatant.

Painted Turtle vs African Bullfrog: Who has more Stamina?

African Bullfrogs are explosive creatures. They launch powerful strikes that catch their prey off guard and allow them to move quickly in the event they need to retreat. But all this explosive energy comes at a cost: these animals tire quickly and will need to rest in between strikes. Painted Turtles, however, are the masters of endurance. They don’t expend much energy in fights simply because they don’t need to. If they are being attacked, their go-to method of defense is to retreat into their shells. While they are hiding in their shells, they simply need to wait the attacker out while keeping their limbs and head tucked in safely. In this category, the turtle is the winner by a long shot. With all the categories examined, it's time to move into the battle scenario.

A painted turtle is traveling in between ponds in search of food when it accidentally stumbles into the territory of an angry, hyper-aggressive African Bullfrog. The turtle, blissfully unaware of the potential danger, continues on its way while the bullfrog launches its assault.

It lunges at the turtle taking a nasty bite of its leg. The painted turtle then retreats into its shell. The bullfrog continues to bite at its shell...but the turtle is completely unphased. The African Bullfrog continues to launch attack after attack to no avail.

This continues for several minutes and the frog’s body starts to accumulate a deadly amount of lactic acid. With each attack becoming less and less powerful the turtle pops its head out to launch its long-awaited counter-strike. The turtle sticks its head out and uses its beak to bite at the front limbs, tearing flesh and causing immense pain to the already exhausted animal. The battle leaves the frog bloodied, exhausted and beaten. In this battle, it simply bit off way more than it could chew. Winner: Painted Turtle.

The tank won a slow and steady battle. In the Fantasy Brawls battle arena a good defense is sometimes the best offense. And like the battle you just witnessed, the turtle has better HP and Defensive stats and the frog has higher Speed and Attack. However, unlike this battle the Frog in Fantasy Brawls has the ability to inflict Poison. This status chips away at the opponent’s HP which can help turn the tide of battle in the frog’s favor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Could The Frog Beat The Turtle?

Unless the turtle bites off a piece of the frog’s leg and chokes on it, there isn’t much the frog can do to win. In nearly all cases a full-grown frog cannot hope to penetrate the shell of a fully grown, or even juvenile (certain species) turtle.

If The Fight Took The Place In Water Would That Change The Outcome?

A fight underwater would actually be worse for the frog. Turtles can hold their breath for hours on end. Frogs can hold their breath for a maximum of thirty minutes. And while impressive when compared to humans, it pales in comparison to the turtle’s underwater endurance.

Could a Poison Dart Frog Kill a Turtle?

Since Poison Dart Frogs are poisonous not venomous, meaning the need to be ingested for the toxin to be dangerous, they would likely die before the turtle.

What Is The Biggest Frog In The World?

The Goliath Frog is the biggest frog in the world, coming in at 7 pounds and measuring over a foot in length.

Could a Goliath Frog beat a Turtle?

While it holds the title of the biggest Frog, it still does not have the jaw power needed to topple a fully grown turtle of comparable size.

How Long Can a Turtle Stay in Its Shell?

Turtles live in their shells and can retract their limbs into them for an obscenely long amount of time. During periods of brumation, some remain in a retracted position for months.
