In this week’s edition of Fantasy Brawls we have two of the most vicious brawlers in the world, the hyper aggressive Sloth Bear and the menacing Spotted Hyena. Both of these animals regularly tangle with the likes of Lions and Tigers so they are built for power and durability. Which of these animals has what it takes to walk away with the W? Let’s find out by first examining the size of each combatant.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear, Who Is Bigger?

Hyena’s are much smaller than I originally thought, tipping the scales at less than 200 pounds on average. So they aren’t huge, at least by Fantasy Brawls standards, in fact I have around 20 pounds on the biggest Hyena at the time of writing. Sloth Bears on the other hand are much bigger. Big males can reach over 300 pounds and stand up to 6 feet tall when standing upright. Hyenas, by contrast, are about 2 to 3 feet at the shoulder. So, in this category, the advantage goes to the Sloth Bear. Next up, we’ll examine the power of each beast to see who’s stronger.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear, Who Is Stronger?

Sloth Bears are much bigger than Hyenas but all that bulk does not guarantee an advantage in the power department. Though Sloth Bears can be nearly twice as heavy as Hyenas they can’t touch them when it comes to bite force. The vicious Teddy bears possess a bite force of around 800 psi, respectable but not on par with the laughing menace. The Spotted Hyena has a massive bite force, coming in at 1,100 pounds per square inch. This gives them one of the highest bite forces in the animal kingdom relative to their size.

But battles aren’t won on biting along, particularly when you’re fighting an animal as versatile as a bear. Sloth Bears use their paws to swipe, can tackle like pro linebackers, and grapple better Olympic Greco Roman champs. Sloths possess ridiculous upper body strength that allows them to hoist their massive 300 pound bodies up trees. The gap between the combatants' explosive power is huge. Hyenas may bite harder but they can’t hold a candle to the overall strength of a Sloth Bear. In this category, the Sloth Bear racks up another point. But strength isn’t everything, speed and agility play a huge role in many battles. So let’s see which one of these regal creatures is faster.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear, Who Is Faster?

Sloth Bears, in spite of their name, actually move pretty quick. They have a top speed of 25 miles per hour in short bursts, making them way faster than me and nearly every other human on the planet. These fast bursts coupled with the Sloth’s explosive power means anybody on the receiving end of one of its tackles is due for a world of hurt. But…hyenas can keep pace with some of the fastest animals in Africa. Spotted hyenas can reach speeds of up to 40 miles per hour and can keep a fast, steady pace for miles enabling them to chase prey to exhaustion.

Not only are Hyenas faster than Sloth Bears, they have much better stamina. But what about in the agility department, do things get better for the bear? No. No, they do not. In battle Sloth Bears rely heavily on brute strength, they aren’t built for nimble movements and cannot turn on a dime like their foe. Hyenas regularly compete with agile creatures like leopards and lions so the ability to strike, dodge and reposition rapidly is crucial to their survival. So, when it comes to both speed and agility, the Hyena takes this one by a landslide. Next up, we’ll look at the toolkit each beast is bringing to the battlefield.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear, who has the better weaponry?

The Hyena’s main weapon is that jaw. A bite that can split bones, snap femurs, and crack skulls. This is a predator that lives off marrow. When it chomps, it’s not just skin and muscle on the line, bones themselves become snacks. The Hyena’s teeth are blunted compared to a cat’s, but they’re perfectly shaped for crushing. Add in that powerful neck and jaw muscles, and a Hyena’s bite is one of the most devastating weapons in the wild.

But the Sloth Bear is not defenseless in the tooth department either. With sharp canines and a respectable 800 psi bite, it’s no pushover. Still, what sets it apart is not the jaws, but the claws. Long, curved, almost sickle-like claws that dig, rip, and tear. These claws are designed for tearing apart termite mounds and tree bark, but in battle they’re just as effective against flesh and bone. Combine that with a bear’s swiping power, one paw can break bones or open deep gashes, and suddenly you’re looking at a far more versatile arsenal. The bear can grapple, it can slash, it can bite, and it can wrestle you to the ground.

Advantage: Sloth Bear.

The Hyena has the better single weapon with that bone-crusher bite. But the Sloth Bear has the better arsenal overall, bringing multiple offensive tools into the fight. But what about defense, after all, you have to be able to tank damage just as well as you dish you it out in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena.

Combatant Weaponry
Hyena Bone-crushing jaw with 1,100 psi bite force and blunted teeth perfect for crushing.
Sloth Bear Sharp canines with 800 psi bite force; long, curved claws for ripping and tearing; swiping power to break bones.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear, who has the better defense?

The Hyena’s build is like a tank on four legs. Dense bone structure, sloped shoulders that act like shock absorbers, and thick hides that shrug off bites and scratches from lions. Their neck muscles are so powerful that even when another predator latches on, the Hyena can often twist free or keep fighting through the pain.

The Sloth Bear, though, is the very definition of a damage sponge. That shaggy coat isn’t just for looks, it cushions slashes and bites. Their loose skin allows them to twist inside an attacker’s grip, much like a honey badger. And then there’s the raw bulk. Three hundred pounds of bear mass means they can tank damage in ways a Hyena just can’t. Add in the fact that Sloth Bears have survived tiger maulings and kept on fighting, and you know this is one animal that doesn’t fold easily.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear, who is smarter?

Hyenas are famously clever. Their social structure is one of the most advanced in the animal kingdom. They plan hunts, they use teamwork, they communicate with eerie “laughs” that aren’t jokes at all but tactical signals. A solo Hyena is already dangerous, but in a clan, their intelligence skyrockets. They know how to test opponents, feint attacks, and wear down prey.

Sloth Bears on the other hand are not pack animals. They’re solitary, roaming bruisers who solve problems in brute-force ways. Smarts? They have enough to raid farms, sniff out hidden honey, and scale trees with tactical awareness. But they’re not matching the Hyena’s social cunning.

Hyena vs Sloth Bear: The Fantasy Brawl!

Fantasy Battle Between a Sloth Bear and Hyena

The Hyena circles, darting in and out with lightning speed. Its bone-crushing jaws snap forward, clamping onto the bear’s shoulder. The sound is awful, crunching teeth against bone. Any lesser animal would collapse. But the Sloth Bear doesn’t flinch. It snarls, twists its body, and tanks the bite with sheer brute toughness.

Another lunge from the Hyena, this time to the hindquarters. Another brutal bite. The bear absorbs it, its shaggy hide and loose skin keeping the damage from penetrating too deep. Then comes the counter. The Sloth Bear rears up on its hind legs, towering over the Hyena like a furry executioner. With a roar, it slams its paw down across the Hyena’s back. With a loud crack the hyena’s vertebrae snaps. It collapses as its legs are no longer responding. The bear stands over its fallen foe, chest heaving, claws dripping. Winner: Sloth Bear.

More Hypothetical Matchups Await!

The Sloth Bear took the win today. Its power and size advantage was just too much for the Hyena to overcome. If you think you have a way for the Hyena to win this battle, put that theory to the test in the Fantasy Brawls Battle Arena. Both the Hyena and Sloth Bear are Earth type brawlers, so the terrain you choose won’t make much of a difference. To help the Hyena pull off a win, you’ll need to time your buffs, defenses, and attacks just right.

And, if you’re a fan of the Sloth Bear, check out its other battle against its arch nemesis in Sloth vs Tiger. The cool part about that battle is that unlike many other hypothetical matchups on our site, that one is probably taking place as you reach this article!

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Sloth Bears Eat Meat?

Yes, most bears are omnivorous, with an exception being the evolutionary disappointment, the Panda Bear. As such, Sloth Bears will eat meat. Their favorite snacks are termites and honey, but if meat’s on the menu, they won’t turn it down.

Can a Hyena Kill a Bear?

No, not a fully grown healthy bear. They are way too big and strong for a single Hyena to take down. If a coordinated attack of 2 or 3 Hyenas comes through, though? It’s lights out for Yogi.

Who Has the Stronger Bite, Sloth Bear or Hyena?

That one goes to the Hyena. With over 1,000 pounds of bone-crunching bite force, they can split a zebra femur like it’s a breadstick. Sloth Bears bite hard too, but their real danger comes from those long, hook-like claws.

Are Sloth Bears Dangerous to Humans?

Absolutely. In fact, they’re one of the most aggressive bears when it comes to humans. Tigers have learned not to mess with them, and villagers in India know they’re not to be trifled with either. One swipe and you’re in the ER.

Are Hyenas Stronger Than Wolves?

Yes. A Spotted Hyena is basically a wolf that hit the gym, doubled in weight, and trained its jaws to chew through steel. Wolves are pack hunters, but pound-for-pound the Hyena is a much scarier animal to face.

Do Sloth Bears Really Fight Tigers?

Yes…and the crazy part is, sometimes they win. Tigers usually get the better of the exchange, but Sloth Bears are tough enough and mean enough that even big cats think twice before picking a fight.

Who Would Win in a Pack Battle: Hyenas or a Sloth Bear?

If it’s one-on-one, Sloth Bear all day. But if four or five Hyenas show up, that bear is in trouble. Hyenas are built for teamwork, and they’ll wear down even something as tough as a bear with relentless bites and stamina.
