In this week’s edition of Fantasy Brawls, we have two mighty immortals in the battle arena. Fighting out of the red corner is the dapper bloodsuck himself, the powerful vampire. And his opponent is a furry ball of destruction, the werewolf. Each of these creatures brings a litany of powers, lore, and special abilities to the battlefield. And since these creatures have existed since time immemorial, their abilities vary greatly. So, to keep things level, we’ll agree on a set of powers for our combatants.

Here’s a little about the vamp we’re using:

  • Can transform into a bat
  • Killed by holy water, sunlight, and a wooden stake through the heart
  • Superhuman strength, speed, and durability
  • High intellect
  • Limited mind control abilities

And, here’s the werewolf we’re using:

  • Can transform at will, no need for a full moon
  • Killed by silver
  • Superhuman strength, reflexes, and durability
  • Keen sense of smell
  • Powerful healing factor

With that out of the way, let’s begin our battle analysis by determining which of these creatures is stronger.

Vampire vs Werewolf: Who Is Stronger?

Vampires are one of the strongest beings in all of fiction. No matter the media, they possess extremely high levels of strength, enabling them to punch through walls and fling humans hundreds of feet without breaking a sweat. Their power is nearly unrivaled in the realm of fiction.

That is until you look at the power werewolves possess. The vamp’s opponent is much larger, often having a foot or two advantage when it comes to height. On the scale, werewolves outweigh vampires by hundreds of pounds.

They have terrifyingly powerful jaws, possess explosive jumping/pouncing abilities, and can tear through home walls made of brick and concrete. When it comes to raw power, werewolves have the clear advantage here. It's not that vampires aren’t strong; they just aren’t as tuned for power as the wolves are. Advantage: Werewolf. But, what about speed and agility? Will the vampire have what it takes to outpace an occasionally quadrupedal foe?

Vampire vs Werewolf: Who is Faster?

As a general rule of thumb in nature, quadrupedal animals are much faster than bipedal animals. This is due to a number of factors, with the primary one being that four points of contact enable faster locomotion than two points of contact with the ground. And if you don’t believe this, just check my Ring camera. Whenever our dog darts out of the house, it leaves me in the dust, and I’m an avid runner. No matter how much I train, I can’t even match the speed of a Frenchie!

So, does the vampire stand a chance in the speed department against a werewolf? Surprisingly, yes. Werewolves can run on their hind legs or on all fours but are at their fastest in quad mode. This running method allows them to navigate rough terrain like forests and frozen tundras. Vamps, on the other hand, are human-like in their running style but are so fast you’d think they were teleporting.

To the naked eye, their movements appear as blurs, similar to what happens when The Flash runs. I theorize that this speed is enhanced by their magical abilities. Vamps may manipulate time, air, and space itself to allow themselves faster means of travel. This makes landing a hit on them nearly impossible. Advantage: Vampire. With speed and power analyzed and out of the way, let’s move on to the supernatural powers each beast brings to the table.

Vampire vs Werewolf: Who Has the Better Powers?

Vampires have an impressive arsenal of powers at their disposal. And while this varies from story to story, all of them generally give vampires the ability to shapeshift and implement mind control/strong influence. Shifting into a bat isn’t too impressive considering what lycans can do, but flight can certainly help you out in a pinch. Provided the vampire hasn’t sustained too much damage, it can simply fly away to avoid the werewolf’s onslaught without fear of being followed.

Its other ability is the most impressive by far. Mind control is one of the most overpowered abilities in fiction. Being able to control your opponent’s movement is the key to an easy win against almost any foe. Werewolves also have some crazy powers in addition to their explosive strength.

These furry assassins have a healing factor that would make X-Men’s Wolverine envious. While they can’t regenerate entire severed limbs like Namekians, they can recover from severe physical trauma, stop bleeding, and restore torn muscle and broken bones. And like their wolfy counterparts, they have a very strong sense of smell that gives them a pseudo-spidey sense.

This is an important skill to have in a battle against a stealthy foe like a vampire. Being able to smell exactly where your foe is prevents a sneak attack and effectively neutralizes the vampire’s ambush tactics. Given the impressive healing factor and super smelling powers, we’re giving the werewolf the edge over the vampire. The latter’s abilities are great but not as impressive in melee combat as its opponent’s. Advantage: Werewolf. But I know what you’re thinking, can’t the vampire just hypnotize the werewolf and have it eat a bowl of silver? Well…let’s find out.

Does a Vampire’s Mind Control Work on Werewolves?

Vampires have very powerful telepathic powers. They routinely hypnotize humans and force them to do their bidding. However, their influence over each other and other immortals is much more limited. For example, vampires can generally only hypnotize other vampires whom they have a higher rank/magical ability than. If two vamps are of the same class and power, mind control doesn’t work.

The same rule applies to Werewolves. When in their transformed state, the hypnosis has little to no effect. But if the vampire happens to catch the werewolf in its human form, they may have a chance of controlling it. However, in this scenario, the transformation is complete, thus preventing any mind control from working.

Vampire vs Werewolf: Who Has the More Exploitable Weakness?

Being weak to silver isn’t the worst thing in the world. I personally cannot remember the last time I had any silver in my house. The werewolf’s other weaknesses include: wolfsbane and holy water (shared with vampires). These items are less common unless, of course, you routinely encounter lycans. Vampires, on the other hand, are weak to one of the most common things around, sunlight. And even if it’s nighttime, a strong enough beam of light will melt them in an instant. Without a doubt, the immortal with the easiest exploited weakness is the vamp.

Now, with the battle analysis complete, it's time to find out what happens when the Werewolf and Vampire meet face to face in the Fantasy Brawls battle arena.

The Fantasy Brawl: Vampire vs Werewolf

The battle arena terrain is the Shadowlands, which gives both creatures a boost in their attack. The fight opens in melee. The vampire is faster and lands the first hits, but the werewolf uses its healing factor to recover the damage. The vamp keeps using speed to rock the werewolf with jabs and kicks. Then the werewolf lands a strike across the chest that sends the vamp crashing into a rock. The vamp tries to transform and fly away but is too wounded to get airborne and drops. The wounded vamp is met with a volley of strikes and bites from the werewolf until it can no longer rise. The sun rises and turns the vamp to ashes.

More Fantasy Brawls Await!

If you enjoyed this supernatural showdown, you’ll love the other content on our site.

Keeping with the supernatural theme, check out the showdown between the Genie and Djinn. Both creatures have similar magical powers, but only one will walk…or float away with the W. And if you’d like to play this battle out yourself, head over to Fantasy Brawls - The Online Game.

There you can choose the Werewolf and put him up against the Vampire or vice versa. Keep in mind, both of these beasts are of the Shadow element. The Werewolf has higher attack and defense and access to the move Recover. Vampires have lower attack and defensive power but have access to the move Corrupt. This ability cuts the opponent’s HP in half and causes a slight drop to the target’s attack strength. Vamps also possess higher speed, which increases their chance to dodge attacks.
